BENETEAU and Lagoon warranties: what to check on a used boat

A claim that a boat is still under warranty needs documents tied to that boat. The group name, a recent brochure or model year alone cannot determine what would be covered for a used-boat buyer.

Before relying on a warranty, get written confirmation by hull number: beneficiary, expiry, covered parts, exclusions and claim procedure.

1. Distinguish BENETEAU, Groupe Beneteau and Lagoon

BENETEAU and Lagoon are separate Groupe Beneteau brands. A Lagoon catamaran does not automatically fall under a BENETEAU-branded sailing yacht's advertised warranty. Record make, model, hull number and first delivery date, then contact the relevant network.

Also distinguish manufacturer commercial warranty, equipment supplier warranty, seller commitments and any statutory rights. Their scope depends on contract, country, dates and parties' status. This guide does not decide individual legal rights.

2. BENETEAU's presentation and what to confirm

The French BENETEAU page consulted advertises seven years of structural warranty and three years for parts and labour. This commercial summary does not provide a new seven-year warranty at every resale.

Its German service page specifies a start at new-boat delivery, recognition of the defect by technicians and, for the stated parts/labour cover, a full annual dealer inspection at the owner's expense. It refers to general terms. Obtain those issued for your boat instead of applying this presentation to every year and market.

3. Does the warranty follow a used boat?

Our documentary research does not establish a universal transfer rule for every used BENETEAU or Lagoon. Request the certificate, original terms and written network confirmation for the ownership change. A maintenance invoice or brochure screenshot is no substitute.

If remaining cover is used to justify the price, record exactly what is confirmed. Ask about new-owner registration, inspection, evidence and deadlines. If transfer or cover is uncertain, cost the purchase without assuming a future repair will be reimbursed.

  • First delivery date and precise expiry of each coverage.
  • Permitted private or commercial use, geographical scope and exclusions.
  • Maintenance evidence, incident declarations and previous repairs.
  • Transfer procedure and beneficiary confirmed in writing.

4. Do not apply a current Lagoon offer to an older boat

The current Lagoon 42 Millenium page states seven years for structure, three years general warranty and five years for Yanmar engines only, with exclusions. That does not establish those periods for a Lagoon 450 delivered years earlier.

Any extension, engine warranty and repair protocol are separate documents. Clarify hull, equipment, engines and previous work individually. Ask what covers this hull number today, not how many years the brand advertises online.

5. Lagoon 450 bulkheads: obtain an individual file

Lagoon's published protocol provides for inspection within its network; outside warranty, labour is reviewed case by case. It also describes a one-year warranty on work carried out under that protocol. This historical information must be reconfirmed before a commitment in 2026.

Request a written response for the boat and review it with your surveyor. Do not commission structural repairs assuming an invoice will be reimbursed later.

6. Prepare a request to the dealer

Write a factual request: boat identification, current owner, when the problem appeared, precise description, photos, reports and available history. Do not turn an assumed cause into a certainty. Keep responses and chronology in the sale file.

Request a written breakdown covering diagnosis, parts, labour, handling, transport, storage and taxes. Clarify who authorises and accepts the work. If seaworthiness is in doubt, consult a competent expert; a general webpage is not permission to go to sea.

If cover is refused, request the reasons and clauses relied on. Separate commercial discussion from any legal remedy, to be considered with a professional under the applicable country and deadlines. Do not let informal negotiation obscure a contractual or legal deadline.
